the most frequent complaint we get from students is
other students' talking or texting in class, as this is a distraction and annoyance for your fellow students
expect credit for being in this class,
you may not work on other things and
Why do we have to come to class? Why not let us skip?
Simple: People who come to class learn more psychology than those who don't, and it is my job to get you to learn as much psychology as I can.
you are being indirectly subsidized by the taxpayers to the tune of over
$1200 per week—that's $30 an hour!
on average, you should be spending
two hours outside of class for every hour in class.
I have been here for _______ years
43 years
Are funerals excused absences? What do I have to do about them? Why do you demand proof at such a terrible time?
Seriously, you need to bring back a form on the letterhead of the funeral home, signed by the funeral director, indicating the name of the deceased, their relation to you, and the fact that you were there. Funeral directors get this request all the time, and they will be happy to help you with it.
Why won't you let us go to weddings?
this is why you get two "free" absences before any penalties kick in—so you can use them for special things like weddings.
Why do we have to fill out the workbooks?
They make taking your class notes simple, straightforward, and organized, and they make it easy for you to study for your tests. They are based on a famous technique that has been well researched and proven to help students do better—and I want all of you to do well!
Go over your notes right after class and fill in any blanks and rewrite anything illegible or incomplete while you still remember it; Read and study your textbook. Use your workbook to study for the class lecture portion of your test.

took a unit test when I was sick / had a personal crisis / whatever and I got a 20 on it. Surely you won't count that, right?
I'm sorry, but once you take a test, it counts.
I missed the unit test. When's the make-up test?
If you miss one of the first four unit tests, no matter what the reason, we will give you a blank (not a zero, just a blank) until you take the Final Exam, and then that grade will be counted twice: once for the Final Exam, and once again in place of the test you missed.
Why don't we go over the test in class?
The logistics would be very difficult, it would burn up most of a class period, and most people don't want to go over it.
Here are my usual ones tricks on test
I might reverse something by adding a "not" or otherwise reversing its meaning; I might give you a definition you have seen before, but it goes with another term, not the one I am asking about; I might greatly change the magnitude of something, like putting 28% instead of 10%; or I might totally make something up--so if you have been to class and have read the book and you see something in a test question that you have never heard of in your life, it is probably something false that I made up.
I missed something in the lecture!
No problem. The numbers in parentheses after each item number in your workbook are the page or pages in your textbook where the same material is covered.
I think I want to major in Psychology, or maybe minor in it. What do I do?
Take more Psychology courses, and see if you find the field as fascinating as I do! Online you will find a summary of the requirements for minoring and majoring in Psychology, the requirements for concentrating in Pre-Medical Psychology, and the requirements for minoring in Psychology.
Do you do counseling?
No, I have not done that in many years, but I do know several excellent counselors, both at the MSU Counseling Center and in private practice. I would be happy to give you their names if you or a friend or a family member would like to consult a good counselor.
Dr. C., is there anything I can't tell you?
Scholars, you can tell me anything you want, as long as it is not illegal
Is it true that you have had three dozen cars or something like that?
Yes, it is true. Three years ago, I bought my dream car: a 2014 Volkswagen Eos. I do have about 150 beautiful cars, but they are all scale models.
Is there anything else that you collect?
have enough cool neckties to go an entire semester without repeating one, if I want to. I have a particular fondness for Jerry Garcia neckties. (But no, I was never a "Deadhead.') I also have a bunch of t-shirts, maybe 40 or 50, that I like.
I hear you are a big baseball fan.
You will see a rare row of three seats up there, that I got for my boys and me many years ago. I still enjoy them, especially when the weather is hot. I took my grandson to his first game up there. We call it "The Top of the World."
How many children do you have?
four
___________ is the official restaurant of the Carskadon family—we celebrate all our birthdays there.
Little Dooey's
Why do you call us "scholars"?
"Scholar" is complementary, gender-neutral, and a good reminder of what bright, interesting people you are.
I intend to teach for at least _________ years total. Mississippi State is my life!
50-60 years total.
For in-person studies, be sure to write down the date, time, location (building and room number) for the study. The Psychology Main Office will not have this information. It is your responsibility to record this information.

Insiders Guide
To MSU
that in four years, I will have served here for fully one-third of the entire history of Mississippi State University.
I guess that makes me the logical person to tell you some things about the history and traditions of this great school.
The students haven't changed very much at all.
but the University has changed enormously.

Our Four Themes (OFT)
Inclusion at MSU (IAM)
Service at MSU (SAM)
Expansion of MSU (EOM)
Research at MSU (RAM)
Inclusion at MSU (IAM):
The People's University (TPU)
The first is a warm, welcoming inclusion of all types of people, regardless of wealth, status, or social class, regardless of gender, regardless of race. We truly are "The People's University."students can enter with nothing, work their way through with jobs, loans, and grants, and graduate with a university degree that will be the key to their future success.
Service at MSU (SAM)
core part of the University mission is to serve the people in return: locally, statewide, nationwide, and worldwide.
Expansion of MSU (EOM)
Over our history we have added program after program, field after field, specialty after specialty to become a truly comprehensive university. And we have continually expanded the number of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled here.
Research at MSU (RAM)
The fourth overriding theme is research. Without research, there is no knowledge to teach.
Early MSU History (EMH)
Mississippi State University is a land-grant institution. In 1862, in the midst of the Civil War and ungodly strife and crisis, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act, providing land in every state to provide higher education in agriculture, mechanical arts (what we now think of as engineering), military science, and associated academic subjects.
, it was the University of Mississippi that was designated as one of the state's two land-grant schools: Ole Miss for whites, and Alcorn for blacks.
Ole Miss students showed no interest in agricultural programs, and protesting faculty left in droves, Ole Miss renounced its land-grant status. Therefore in 1878, the Mississippi Legislature authorized creation of a new college for this purpose named the Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi, affectionately known as "A&M."
Our first President was Stephen D. Lee
He fought on the Southern side during the Civil War
The first building was completed in late 1880, and the first students arrived on October 6th of that year.
There were 13 faculty and 87 college students, plus another 267 students in a preparatory high school that was then part of the college, designed to prepare students who were not yet ready for college.
All students wore gray uniforms and participated in military training.
There was even a rule against students' bringing or hiring personal servants.
Gambling and drinking were forbidden. Even playing cards were banned, and dances were soon abolished
Any student who was unaccounted for longer than two hours could be expelled. Fraternities and "secret societies" were banned.
first admission of females in 1882,
The main source of more reputable women was the newly established college in Columbus we now call Mississippi University for Women, affectionately known as "The W,"
Steps Toward Redefinition: Coeducation at Mississippi State College 1930-1945,
by Cathryn T. Goree, an MSU graduate.
In the beginning, women were carefully segregated from men, and social contact between the men and women outside of class was strictly prohibited
except on closely supervised special occasions.
In 1912, an innocent meeting between a cadet (all MSU students at the time were military cadets) and a female student in a study room in the library during the noon hour led to restrictions so harsh that a major student rebellion and strike by fully 70% of the student body ensued. It was so bad that the Governor of Mississippi came
a general policy was instituted banning all women from attending college here.
ban against women lifted in
1930, during GD. school needed women's tuition. and then during WWII most of the men left the country
built in 1938 as a men's dorm this became the first female dorm on campus
