Dentition

Natural teeth in the jaw; the arrangement of teeth.

Primary (Deciduous) dentition

First set of teeth; baby teeth.

Permanent (Secondary) teeth

Second set of teeth; replaces primary teeth.

Succedaneous

Teeth that succeed primary teeth after exfoliation; all permanent teeth except molars.

Exfoliation

Shedding or loss of primary teeth.

Maxillary

Upper jaw.

Mandibular

Lower jaw.

Anterior

Front teeth.

Posterior

Back teeth.

Midline

Median line of symmetry in the mouth.

Mesial

Toward the midline of the dental arch.

Distal

Toward the back of the mouth; away from the midline.

Quadrant

One quarter of the mouth or dental arch.

Eruption

The process by which teeth enter the mouth and become visible.
