recognition phase
the body recognizes a pathogen by distinguishing self from non-self
Activation phase
the body mobilizes molecules and cells to fight the invader
Effector phase
the body destroys the invador
Innate immunity
the body’s generic response to pathogen specific immune response which is preset at birth and requires no experience. defenses present and activate quickly
Adaptive acquired immunity
its pathogen-specific immune response through which it can remember and recognize specific pathogens to better fight them. slow to develop and long-lasting third line of defense
humoral response
b cells and antibodies fighting off infections.
cell-mediated response
cytotoxic T cells defending against infection
Early response (0-4 Hrs)
body initially relies on physical and chemical barriers that help prevent infection ie skin as well as protective conditions such as dryness additional defenses include mucus, defensins, which help destroy microbes
intermediate response (4-96 hours)
activated innate defenses. inflammation phagocytosis etc
late response (>96 hrs)
adaptive specific immunity. humoral immunity, cell-mediated.
