Independent Clause

A clause that can stand alone as a complete sentence.

Simple Sentence

A sentence with one subject and one predicate.

Compound Sentence

A sentence that combines two independent clauses using a comma and a coordinating conjunction.

Complex Sentence

A sentence that contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

Compound-Complex Sentence

A sentence that contains at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

Dependent Clause

A phrase that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence, often begins with a subordinating conjunction.

Predicate (Verb)

Tells what the subject is or does (the action).

Subject

Tells who or what the sentence is about.

Subordinating Conjunction

Words that begin dependent clauses, examples include when, while, although, because, since, until.

Declarative Sentence

A sentence that makes a statement or expresses an opinion.

Interrogative Sentence

A sentence that asks a question.

Imperative Sentence

A sentence that gives a command or request.

Exclamatory Sentence

A sentence that expresses strong emotion and ends with an exclamation mark.
