facts about refined divorce rate
- Divorce is expensive and is sensitive to economic conditions; divorce rates tend to be lower during economic downturns because couples can’t afford to live separately. In 2018, the divorce rate reached a 40-year low (Allred 2019b). Still, for every two marriages that takes place, there is one divorce (Schweizer 2019).
- There was an unprecedented rise in divorce between 1960 and 1980, when the refined divorce rate (the number of divorces per 1,000 married women) more than doubled.
