rutter ERA (1998) - english romanian adopted project AMC (NO R)
a: inv lt effects of early institutionalisation of several development in romanian children adopted by uk families to birtish children who hadn’t experienced deprivation
m: 165 roman children (before 3.5y) adopted by uk families vs control g of 52 british adopted
romanian orphans were divided into those adopted early and kate (before and after 6m in institution)
all assessed by a range of ages (longitudinal) and assessed early variety of measures- physical, intellectual, cognitive functioning abilities
c: findings show that earlier adoption leads to better recovery while later had difficulty but all improved later in AH
ERA project results
physical development:
CH: weight romanian adoptees were in bottom 3% population (low) and height was shorter than average HOWEVER by age 4 these physical differences were no longer apparent when compared to control
AH: physical effects on the brain were much longer lasting for romanian late adoptees (mackes 2020')
emotional development
CH: disinhibited attachment: was shown in late adoptees including a lack or wariness of strangers, inappropiate affectionate behaviour walking off with strangers leaving CG. by age 6 many romanian adoptees showed signs of this. age 11 this was still displayed by 50% of r. children.
rates of recory were better for those adopted before 6m
AH: self reported emotional difficulties showed marked increased in young AH for late adoptees
cognitive development
CH: Iq measured at 11: 102 adopted early(before6m) , 86 adopted late (6m -2yrs) , 77 adopted after 2 years
late adoptees not british showed: quasi autism, adhd qualities
AH: iq returned to normalrates by AH but unemployment was high in late adoptees
mackes (2020) amr
a: inv lt effects of early institutional deprivation and whether if later adoption into high quality care leads to recovery in AH
m: mackes took mri scans of 67 of orignal r. orphans from ERA all aged 23-28yrs
r: longer time spent in institutional, smaller brain volume (0.27% each month) and related to low iq and symptoms of adhd
strength: longitudinal
p: era project is multi method and longitudinal research of the development of children adopted into uk from romanians earl 1990
e: followed adoptees for over 24y and found those children showed significant psychological recovery after adoption
e: allows researchers to oberve rl lt effects of instituional deprivation
l: shows the research is reliable and valid, challenging bowlby’s maternal deprivation theory
weakness: natural experiment
p: no extraneous variables were controlled
e: children weren’t randomly allocated sp those adopted earlier may have led to higher IQ or better social skills and some may reeiver better care than others (from staff)
e: meaning their outcomes may not be due soley deprivation
l: weakens cause and effect conclusions; however support from bucharest early intervention project used random allocation and found similar results, siggesting rutters findings are valid and reliable
strength: real life applications
p: findings led to immense RL applications
e: findings have led to improvements in the way children are cared for in institutions
e: children in institutions are now assigned to a key worker and 1 /2 CG responsible for them so that the children have a chance to devleop normal attachment, avoiding disinhibited attachment
l: demonstrates value of research and enchanced understanding of the negative effects of instituionalisation and shows practical ways to improve the institutional places.
