robert hooke (1665)
first person to see cells looking at cork and noted saw “a great many of boxes” he thought what resembled cells (rooms) of monastery
anton von leeuwenhook (1673)
observed living cells in pond water (called them “animalcules”. first person to observe bacteria (looking at gunk on teeth) made over 500 microscopes
mattias schleiden (1838)
botanist who observed tissues of plants were made of cells
Theodore schwann (1839)
zoologist that observed that tissues of animals were made of cells
rudolf virchow (1855)
reported that every living thing is made up of vital units called cells. predicted that cells come from other cells.
the cell theory
credit given to schleiden, schwann, and virchow. all cells come from pre existing cells. the cell is the basic unit structure and function. it’s the smallest unit that can preform life functions
cell shapes
cells have different shapes due to different functions. structure relates to function.
nerve cells shape
long extensions to send out and receive impulses quickly.
sperm cells shape
tails for moving
red blood cells
round, no large organelles take up space. b/c function carries oxygen (creates more space carrying oxygen) spoke cell (abnormal rbc)
prokaryotic cells
(“before nucleus”), no nucleus, simple cells lack organelles including nucleus, bacteria are the only prokaryotic
eukaryotic cells
(“true nucleus”) almost everything is this except bacteria. contains a membrane bound nucleus & organelles. more advanced than prokaryotic
