Stress
A challenge to a person's capacity to adapt to inner and outer demands, often producing physiological and emotional arousal.
Fight or Flight Response
A physiological reaction to threat where the autonomic nervous system prepares the body to either fight or flee from danger.
General Adaptation Syndrome
A theory formulated by Hans Selye that describes the body's response to stressors in three stages: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion.
Primary Appraisal
The initial assessment of a stressor to determine if it is perceived as a threat, challenge, or irrelevant.
Secondary Appraisal
The evaluation of one's ability to cope with the stressor, determining what can be done to minimize its impact.
Types of Stress
Three classifications of stress proposed by Lazarus: harm or loss, threat, and challenge.
Cumulative Stress
The idea that multiple minor stressors can accumulate and have a combined effect similar to that of major stressors.
Social Support
The presence of others from whom one can expect help and concern, which can act as a buffer against stress.
Problem-Focused Coping
A strategy of coping that involves actively changing or addressing the stressful situation.
Emotion-Focused Coping
A strategy of coping that aims to manage emotional responses to stress rather than changing the stressor.
Psychoneuroimmunology
The study of how psychosocial factors influence the functioning of the immune system.
