Role of Police
Investigate crime, pursuit of leads, interviewing and collecting statements from suspects and witnesses, enforcing laws, sending cases to CPS, arrest, stop and search/account, issues FPN, maintain public order and protection.
Role of Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)
Review police evidence, decide whether to prosecute, legal advice, represent the Crown in court, application of full code test and threshold test.
Role of Ministry of Justice (MoJ)
Oversees whole CJS, sets policies, allocates funding, protect and advance principles of justice, ensures fairness and effectiveness.
Role of HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS)
Runs all courts in England and Wales, organises trials, hearings and sentencing, supports judiciary in delivering justice.
Role of HM Prison Service
Manages prisons, holder offenders serving custodial sentences, works on rehabilitation and resettlement.
Role of National Probation Service (NPS)
Supervises offenders in the community - community orders or on licence, supports rehabilitation of offenders, manages risk to the public, enforces court orders.
Role of Sentencing Council
Consistency in sentencing, judges can adapt for individual cases, independent body that produces guidelines for courts on appropriate sentence.
