Types of Irony-AP Lit

Situational irony

a mismatch between two elements (usually between someone’s internal state and physical state)

verbal irony

words undercut by situation (a wedding reception at arby’s and you say it’s “classy” you’re being sarcastic which is verbal irony)

dramatic irony

mismatch between what audience knows and characters know (titanic and guest are saying the ships unsinkable)

irony

an energetic mismatch between two layers of meaning
