Dependent vs. independent
Thing measured, thing changed
Experimental vs. control groups
Has all the same variables as the control group but has one change (gets the independent). All variables are same as experimental but no control groups. Experimental gets changes, control group is what you compare it to.
What makes a controlled experiment a controlled experiment?
Only one variables is changed. So you don't change the amount of pennies and the amount of dish soap, you just change the amount of dish soap.
What are the steps of the scientific method?
1. Make an observation that leads to a questions
2. Form a hypothesis
3. Design a controlled experiment
4. Collect data
5. Analyze data
What are the characteristics of life? All must be checked
1. Must have many/more than one cell (unicellular/multicellular)
2. Must reproduce (sexual/asexual)
3. Respond to stimulus in environment (something happens it reacts to)
4. Homeostasis (maintain balance)
5. Evolution (change over time)
What are the two kinds of reproduction?
Sexual - needs 2 parents, asexual - 1 parent makes copy of self
Quantitative vs. qualitative
Numbers vs. Description (colors, shape, etc)
Hypothesis vs. theory
Testable question vs. observation. Explains why or how something is happening, is made up of many hypothesis
Importance of peer review
Different viewpoint, fact check, additional information, make sure paper is unbiased, and check math
Why do scientists use metric system?
It's used worldwide so data is consistent, easy conversions, and more precise measurements
The units of the metric system
kilo (K), hecto (h), deka (da), BASE, deci (d), centi (c), milli (m)
How to convert metric system?
Move decimal based on what its being changed to
Convert 0.45 L to mL.
540
Convert 0.45 deci to hecto
0.00045 Include Base in conversion
