What are policies to reduce inequality?

Crime control policy- Left realists call for a major structural changes to tackle discrimination, Inequality and unfair rewards by improving housing, job security and access to health services for everyone in society. This has been influenced by left realism as it would reduce relative deprivation.- the main cause of crime. An example of policies that have been introduced to reduce inequality are tackling homelessness, universal credit and free school meals.

Not effective- crimes that aren’t linked to poverty complex.

What is democratic policing?

A crime control policy- In areas of deprivation, People may distrust the police. Therefore, policies that aim to improve the relationship between communities and law enforcers have been put in place. An example of democratic policing policy is the introduction of PCSO’s.

What are PCSO’s?

Police community support officers. They are uniformed civilian members of the police force who work closely with police officers in local areas to address crime and antisocial behaviour.

Effective- get cooperation between community and police. Visibility seeing them can act as a deterrent.

Not effective- maybe discriminatory. Policing certain social groups more than others because working in deprived areas.

What is multi- agency approach?

A crime control policy- left realists argue it needs to be more of a collaborative approach, not just separate institutions such as the police, education, health, Social services, housing and probation. These institutions can all work together and all help to reduce crime as part of this policy. No knives, Better lives is an example of this.

A Scottish national program that aims to deter young people from antisocial behaviour and carrying knives. Works with local authorities, youth workers and practitioners.
