Old industrial areas and heavy industries closed to the port and railway station had become run down.

Port moved to Avonmouth and Portbury, docks and industrial buildings were abandoned and large areas became derelict.

Abandoned factories and railway sidings left land contaminated with industrial pollution and waste.

Several buildings were listed which prevented them being demolished.

1930s Royal Mail sorting office was demolished in 2013.
