Equation
A mathematical sentence that shows that two expressions are equivalent.
Proportion
An equation that states that two ratios are equivalent.
Ratio
A comparative value of two or more amounts.
Unit Rate
A rate in which the second quantity in the comparison is one unit.
Distributive Property
Multiplying a number is the same as multiplying its addends by the number, then adding the products.
Difference
The result when one number is subtracted from another.
Product
The result when two or more numbers are multiplied.
Quotient
The result when one number is divided by another.
Sum
The result when adding, a total or whole.
GCF
The biggest number that will divide two or more numbers exactly.
LCM
The smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers.
Absolute Value
The distance of a number from zero on a number line.
Integer
Any positive or negative whole number.
Opposite Numbers
Two numbers that have the same numeral but opposite signs.
Inequality
The relationship between 2 values (less than, greater than, or not equal to).
Exponent
The number that indicates how many times the base number is multiplied by itself.
Coefficient
A number which multiplies a variable.
Substitute
To replace a variable with a number or another expression in an algebraic expression.
Order of Operations
A rule for solving expressions: parentheses, powers and roots, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction.
Height
The perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite vertex or side.
Net
A flat shape that can be folded up into a 3-D solid.
Surface Area
The sum of the areas of the faces of a 3-D shape.
Unit
Another name for one.
Volume
The amount of space taken up by a 3D shape, measured in cubic units.
Mean
The sum of the items in a set of data divided by the number of items in the set (average).
Median
The middle number or the mean of the two middle numbers in an ordered set of data.
Mode
The number or numbers that occur most frequently in a set of data.
Range
The difference between the greatest and least values in a data set.
Variable
A symbol that represents a number.
Expression
A mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers, and/or variables.
