Nutrition
The process in which your body uses the food that you eat.
Nutrients
Components of food that provide nourishment and help our bodies function.
Protein
Used to make and repair the body’s cells (tissues, organs, muscles).
Fats
Substances that build brain cells, help absorb certain vitamins, and insulate our bodies.
Carbohydrates
Broken down into glucose to feed our body’s cells, providing energy.
Vitamins
Made by plants or animals and help with specific body tasks.
Minerals
Naturally found in food and help with specific body tasks.
Water
A liquid that helps regulate temperature, deliver nutrients to cells, and eliminate waste.
Complete Proteins
Contain all essential amino acids; sources include meat, poultry, fish, cheese, and eggs.
Unsaturated Fats
Healthier fats that do not build up in the bloodstream as quickly.
Complex Carbohydrates
Break down slower and provide long-lasting energy; sources include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.
Refined Grain
Grains that have been processed to remove the bran and germ, often losing nutrients.
Calcium
A mineral that builds and strengthens bones and teeth.
Sodium
A mineral that controls veins and nerves.
Iron
A mineral that helps carry oxygen to cells through the blood.
Potassium
A mineral involved in muscle control.
