Chemical Potential Energy (Ech)
Energy stored in the bonds between atoms that gets released through a chemical reaction
Examples of Ech
Batteries: Ech converts to Eel
Matches: Matchhead has Ech bc its made of combustable chemicals; when lit, Ech --> Eth and Erad
Nuclear Potential Energy (En)
Energy stores in bonds b/w neurons + protons in nucleus that is released when atoms split or when nuclei fuse
Examples of En
Nuclear power plant: when fission occurs, Eth and Erad are used to produce/generate electricity
Electric Potential Energy (Eel)
Energy due to the separation of charged particles; when electrons + protons separate, Eel is created
Examples of Eel
Capacitor: one plate had positive charge, other has negatie
Gravitational Potential Energy (Eg)
Energy stored in separation of objects with mass
Magnetic Potential Energy
Energy stored in the separation of 2 magnetic objects
Pressure Potential Energy (Epr)
Energy stored in stretching or compressing GASSES or LIQUIDS
How does Epr increase?
Particles get more energy from heat and more around quicker and hit sides of an object
How does Epr decrease?
A balloon deflates because the coldness removes energy from the particles, causing them to slow down
Phase Potential Energy (Eph)
Energy stored in separation of particles in matter, when something changes phase
Examples of Eph
When you boil water, it begins to evaporate and the particles spread out
Spring/Elastic Potential Energy (Esp)
Energy stored in stretching or compressing solids
What does all potential energy convert to?
Kinetic energy
Kinetic Energy (Ek)
Energy of objects in motion
Thermal Energy (Eth)
Energy of random vibrations in matter
Acoustic Energy (Ea)
Energy of patterned vibrations in matter
Radiant Energy (Erad)
Energy of electromagnetic (light) vibrations in space
