Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory
Emphasizes the role of cultural context in influencing people's development throughout life.
Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological Systems Theory
Poses that development results from ongoing interactions among biological, cognitive, and psychological changes within the person and their changing context.
Microsystem
Immediate physical and social environment surrounding the person, including family, peers, and school.
Mesosystem
The relations and interactions among microsystems; experiences in one microsystem influence those at another.
Exosystem
Includes settings in which the individual is not a participant but that influence them; for example, a parent's work setting affecting the child indirectly.
Macrosystem
The larger sociocultural context encompassing the microsystem, mesosystem, and exosystem, including cultural values, legal systems, and religion.
Chronosystem
Refers to how the bioecological system changes over time as individuals grow and take on or let go of various roles.
