Tajfel and Turner

SIT says our identity and behavior is influenced by the groups we belong to

  • Social categorization (in-group and out-group)

  • Social identification (self-esteem, making in-group better, to belong)

  • social Comparison (in-group is better than out-group)

    • In-group: superior, out-group: inferior

    • All sharing common traits in out-group

    • Out-group homogeneity - Basis for stereotyping

Out-group Homogeneity

Hypothesis claims members of in-group, perceive members of their group as more diverse..

  • Out-group being more similar to one another (homogenous) - Alike (less diverse)

Explains formation of stereotypes because they are generalisations about groups of people

  • To do this, make simplified descriptions of the group

  • If they think out-group is similar, easier to generalize and stereotype
