Also called the transatlantic slave trade or Euro-American slave trade; followed the triangular trade route and the Middle passage; over 10 million enslaved Africans made the journey; conditions on the trips were absolutely terrible

United Fruit Company

This and other companies are called banana republic because they had a big influence on politics, economic, and social structure in Latin America; example of western strength compared to developing countries

Cash Crop

Crop grown to sell instead of substance like sugar; before Europeans these crops were only a small part of the agriculture; have a bad effect on the environment and local community; included slave labor

Joint-Stock Companies

First type of investment; they funded explorations of the world; the British Virginia Company started the English colonization of North America; first one was the Dutch East India Company → Spain, Americas

First connection of the East and West Hemisphere; native plants and animals died because of diseases from Europe; European population increased because of healthy foods from the Americas; Atlantic Ocean was a superhighway for cultural blending and diffusion

Seven Years War + Treaty of Paris

England vs France; first “world war” (Britain + Prussia vs France + Austria + Sweden + Russia + Spain); fighting over control of colonies and the fur trade

Effects: English wants the colonists to cover the costs (cause of American Revolution); France wants revenge; france goes bankrupt
