What is one major source of atmospheric pollutants?
Combustion of fuels.
What do most fuels contain?
They contain carbon and/or hydrogen and may also contain some sulfur.
What are some gases released into the atmosphere when a fuel is burned?
Carbon dioxide, water vapour, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. Solid particles and unburned hydrocarbons may also be released that form particulates in the atmosphere.
Why is carbon monoxide dangerous?
It is toxic, odourless and colourless so it is hard to detect.
What bad things about sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen?
They cause respiratory problems in humans and cause acid rain.
Why are particulates bad?
Particulates cause global dimming and health problems for humans.
