Latin Ovid: Echo and Narcissus Part 1

Adspicit hunc trepidos agitantem in retia cervos vocalis nymphe,

As this man Narcissus was chasing the frightened dear into his nets, a talkative nymph noticed him

quae nec reticere loquenti nec prior ipsa loqui didicit, resonabilis Echo.

the answering Echo who has not learnt to keep quiet when someone else is speaking and nor to speak before someone else has spoken first

Corpus adhuc Echo, non vox erat;

Up until now, Echo had a body and was not just a voice

et tamen usum garrula non alium, quam nunc habet, oris habebat,

and although a chatterbox, she had no other power of speech than she has now,

reddere de multis ut verba novissima posset.

that she was able to repeat back the very last words of the many she had heard

Ergo ubi Narcissum per devia rura vagantem vidit et incaluit,

Therefore when she saw Narcissus wandering through the lonely countryside she fell in love with him,

sequitur vestigia furtim, quoque magis sequitur, flamma propiore calescit,

she follows his footsteps secretly, and the more she followed the more she burned with the flame of passion

non aliter quam cum summis circumlita taedis admotas rapiunt vivacia sulphura flammas.

just as when quick-to-ignite sulphur spread around the tops of torches catches fire from a flame brought near

o quotiens voluit blandis accedere dictis et molles adhibere preces.

o how often did she want to approach him with words of affection and to use gentle prayers!

natura repugnat nec sinit incipiat

but her nature prevents it and doesn't allow her to begin

sed, quod sinit, illa parata est exspectare sonos, ad quos sua verba remittat.

but she is ready to do what her condition allows, to wait for some sound to which she may talk back with her own words
