Is Hydrogen Fuel Cells renewable?

Yes

How does a Hydrogen Fuel Cell work?

H2 and O2 generate electricity and H20 is the waste. H2 gas eneters the fuel cell where protons and electrons are split by an ELECTROLYTE membrane that only lets protons through. Electrons take an alternative route. Remaining H atoms combine w/ O2 Atoms.

3
New cards

Why is obtaining H gas difficult?

Seperating H2 gas from other molecules is energy intensive

4
New cards

Steam Reforming

Burning natural gas and using steam to seperate H gas from methane. Emits CO2 and requires FFs

5
New cards

Electrolysis

Electrical current applied to water breaking H2 and O2 apart. No CO2 emmission but requires electricity.

Pros of Hydrogen Fuel Cells

-Can be transported for use creating electricity later

-Can be useful as a fuel for vehicles/fertilizer

-No air Pollutants

-Can be stored as liquid/gas for easy transport

Cons of Hydrogen Fuel Cells

-95% of H2 production requires methane

-H cells are based on Nonrenewable and CO2 release

-Widespread H fuel cells would require widespread H distribution network (like gas stations)

-H fuel stored in gas form requires larger tanks than gas
