Cranial cavity

Located in the head and surrounded by the skull.

Thoracic cavity

Chest cavity; surrounded by the breastbone and ribs.

Pleura

Double membrane surrounding each of the lungs.

Pleural cavity

The space between the pleural membranes.

Mediastinum

Large area between the lungs; houses the heart, esophagus, trachea, and bronchial tubes.

Abdominal cavity

Space below the thoracic cavity; houses stomach, liver, gallbladder, small and large intestines.

Diaphragm

Muscle that separates the abdominal and thoracic cavities.

Peritoneum

Double membrane covering the organs in the abdomen.

Pelvic cavity

Space below the abdominal cavity; surrounded by the pelvis; houses urinary bladder, ureters, urethra, rectum, anus, and uterus.

Spinal cavity

Space surrounded by the spinal column.

Cervical region

Neck region; C1-C7.

Thoracic region

Chest region; T1-T12.

Lumbar region

Loin or waist; L1-L5.

Sacral region

Sacrum or lower back region; S1-S5.

Coccygeal region

Coccyx or tailbone region.
