Classical Conditioning
A learning process that creates an association between a naturally occurring stimulus and a previously neutral stimulus.
Unconditioned Stimulus
A stimulus that naturally and automatically triggers a response without prior learning.
Unconditioned Response
An unlearned response that occurs naturally in reaction to an unconditioned stimulus.
Conditioned Stimulus
A previously neutral stimulus that, after being paired with an unconditioned stimulus, comes to trigger a conditioned response.
Conditioned Response
The learned response to a previously neutral stimulus that has become a conditioned stimulus.
Acquisition
The initial stage in classical conditioning where an association between a neutral stimulus and an unconditioned stimulus is established.
Extinction
The process through which the conditioned response decreases or disappears when the conditioned stimulus is repeatedly presented without the unconditioned stimulus.
Renewal Effect
The reappearance of a conditioned response after extinction when the conditioned stimulus is presented in a different context.
Phobia
An irrational fear of a specific object or situation that arises from a learned association.
Superstition
A belief or practice that arises from a learned association between a behavior and a desired outcome.
