Minor Special Educational Needs (SEN)
Students who require some support or adjustments but can access the general curriculum with minimal intervention.
Major Special Educational Needs (SEN)
Students with disabilities or giftedness requiring specialized instruction, individualized planning, and significant support.
Accommodation
Changes in how a student learns, without changing what they are expected to learn.
Modification
Changes in what a student is expected to learn (curriculum is adjusted).
IEP (Individualized Education Plan)
A plan for students with identified disabilities that outlines goals, services, accommodations, and progress monitoring.
IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan)
A plan for children ages 0–3 focusing on family-centered support and early intervention.
ALP (Advanced Learning Plan)
A plan for gifted/talented students focusing on enrichment, acceleration, and higher-level thinking.
Differentiated instruction
An instructional strategy where teaching is adapted to meet the varying needs of students.
Positive reinforcement
A behavioral strategy that encourages desired behaviors by providing a rewarding response.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
An educational approach that aims to optimize teaching for all individuals by providing multiple means of engagement, representation, and action.
Scaffolded learning
An instructional strategy that provides temporary support to help students achieve understanding and independence.
Culturally responsive teaching
An approach that recognizes the importance of including students' cultural references in all aspects of learning.
