Yalta Conference
A meeting where Allied leaders agreed to divide Germany into four separate zones of occupation.
Nuremberg Trials
An international court established to try former Nazi leaders for crimes against humanity after WWII.
Domino Theory
The idea that if one country fell to communism, others in the region would follow.
NATO
A military alliance formed in April 1949 where an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.
Warsaw Pact
Established in May 1955 as a response to NATO, it was a military alliance of socialist states controlled by the Soviet Union.
Cuban Missile Crisis
A tense conflict between the U.S. and the USSR where the U.S. used brinkmanship to confront the Soviet nuclear threat.
SALT I & II
Strategic Arms Limitation Talks that froze the number of nuclear missiles and launchers for the superpowers.
Partition Plan (1947)
A UN resolution to address Arab-Jewish tensions in Palestine, resulting in the creation of a Jewish state.
Salt March (1930)
A nonviolent civil disobedience movement led by Gandhi against British rule in India.
François ‘Papa Doc’ Duvalier
A Haitian dictator who ruled through terror and used private guards to suppress opposition.
Glasnost
A policy introduced by Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985 that encouraged open criticism of the government and free expression.
Taliban
A group that gained support during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, motivated by religious outrage against Soviet actions.
Bay of Pigs Invasion
A failed military invasion of Cuba by the U.S. aimed to overthrow the new Cuban government.
