Bioinformatics
Interdisciplinary field that combines computer science, biology and maths to interpret biological data.
Sequencing
Determining the precise order of nucleotides in a DNA molecule.
Human Genome
The complete set of nucleic acid sequences in humans.
Molecular Medicine
Aims to provide a molecular understanding of how normal cellular processes change, fail or are destroyed by disease.
Genetic Mapping
A method used to identify the locus of a gene and the distances between genes.
Linkage
The tendency for genes and other genetic markers to be inherited together because of their location near one another on the same chromosome.
Ethical, legal and social implications
To identify and address issues raised by genomic research that would affect individuals, families, and society.
Patent
Confers upon the creator of an invention the sole right to make, use, and sell that invention for a set period of time.
GWAS (Genome Wide Association Studies)
An observational study of a genome-wide set of genetic variants in different individuals to see if any variant is associated with a trait.
Genotype
Part of the genetic makeup of a cell, and therefore of an organism or individual, which determines one of its characteristics.
Recombination
The exchange of genetic material either between multiple chromosomes or between different regions of the same chromosome.
Microsatellite
A tract of repetitive DNA in which certain DNA motifs are repeated.
