Isotonic Solution
A solution that exerts the same osmotic pressure as body fluids such as red blood cells.
Solution
A transparent mixture that contains small particles, ions, or molecules that do not separate and cannot be filtered.
Colloid
A mixture with medium-size particles that do not settle and cannot be filtered.
Suspension
A heterogeneous mixture with very large particles that settle out and can be filtered.
Osmosis
The flow of solvent from lower to higher solute concentration until equilibrium is reached.
Osmotic Pressure
The pressure that would prevent the flow of additional water into a concentrated solution.
Reverse Osmosis
A process that applies pressure greater than osmotic pressure to purify water by forcing it through a membrane.
Hypotonic Solution
A solution with a lower solute concentration than red blood cells that causes cells to swell and burst.
Hypertonic Solution
A solution with a higher solute concentration than red blood cells that causes cells to shrink.
Dialysis
A process where solvent and small solute particles pass through a membrane while larger particles are retained.
