Applied Research

to solve a particular problem

Substance

Matter that has definite and uniform composition - a chemical

Mass

The amount of matter

Weight

The amount of matter and the effect of gravity of that matter - w=mg

Model

Visual, verbal, or mathematical explanation of experimental data

Adding and subtracting sig fig

Round to least number of decimal places

Multiplying and dividing sig fig

Count #SF in each number, round to least #SF

Accuracy

How close single measurement comes to the actual value

Precision

How close the measurements are to each other

Independent Variable

Scientist deliberately changes or chooses values

Dependent variable

Depends on or changes in response to independent

Interpolation

Continuous data allows you to read the value between two recorded points

Extrapolation

Extending a line beyond the plotted points in order to estimate a value
