Carbon Capture and Storage

Carbon capture and storage is the process of capturing carbon that is being produced while fossil fuels are in use. It extracts the carbon that is already in the atmosphere, capturing it so it isn’t emitted into the atmosphere and stays there.

10

Process of Carbon Capture and Storage

Pre-combustion: applying the technology causing reactions with the carbon forming syngas. Reactions continue happening and eventually it is turned from carbon dioxide to hydrogen.

Post-production: separating the carbon dioxide from exhaust gases in a facility’s smoke stacks.

11

Geological Sequestration

Done deep underground in pockets of rock formed from the extraction of fossil fuels. The rock pocket is studied beforehand to make sure that the carbon cannot escape.

New cards
12

Biological Sequestration

Storing carbon in plants, large carbon sinks. This takes advantage of photosynthesis. Can also be done underground in seaweed farms.

Water Desalination and Process

Thermal: the use of heat to evaporate water, collecting the fresh water as condensation and then leaving behind the salts.

Membrane: Reverse osmosis. Water is pushed through a semipermeable membrane, where the pores are small enough for only the water to fit through, not the salts.

14

Water Reclamation

Converting wastewater into water that can be used again. Recycled water comes from greywater and stormwater. Wastewater is treated at a water treatment plant that must follow strict guidelines in order to produce safe and clean water.
