Judges 10:10-16 (Struggle w/ God)
“So the Israelites cried to God for help. They said, ‘God, we have sinned against You. We left our God and worshipped the false God Baal.’ God answered the Israelites, ‘You cried to me when the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, and the Philistines hurt you. I saved you from these people. You cried to me when the people of Sidon, the Amalekites, and the Midianites hurt you. I also saved you from these people. But you left me and started worshipping other gods, so I refuse to save you again. You like worshipping those gods, so go call to them for help. Let them save you when you are in trouble.’ But the Israelites said to God, ‘We have sinned. Do what you want to do to us, but please save us today.’ Then the Israelites threw away the foreign gods and began to worship God again. So He felt sorry for them when he saw them suffering”
These verses demonstrate that God does not just redeem His people, but they exemplify my (our) current struggle even today in putting God first, as we expect idols (his creation - rationality, social media, etc.) to save us instead of Him and nowhere in the book or in the bible where it talks about our struggle is it done more significantly (in my opinion) than in these verses here; the desperation Israel feels at the time to want to know and love God despite their sin is vivid and moving and the fact they they did not just call out to God but threw out what they knew for something they did not know is what we should really be learning from… yes Israel sinned, but they also sacrificed themselves for God when they realized they needed to; something I (and us today) still struggle with accomplishing…
Ruth 1:11-13 (Moving)
“But Naoi said, ‘No, daughters, go back to your own homes. Why should you go with me? I can’t have any more sons to be your husbands. Go back home. I am too old to have a new husband. Even if I thought I could be married again, I could not help you. If I became pregnant tonight and had two sons, you would have to wait until they grew to become men before you could marry them. I cannot make you wait that long for husbands. That would make me very sad. And I am already sad enough - God has done many things to me!”
Ruth 1:16-17 (Moving, Beautiful, Loyalty)
“But [she] said, ‘Don’t force me to leave you! Don’t force me to go back to my own people. Let me go with you. Wherever you go, I will go. Wherever you sleep, I will sleep. Your people will be my people. Your God will be my God. Where you die, I will die, and that is where I will be buried. I ask God to punish me if I don’t keep this promise: Only death will separate us”
Ruth 2:11-12 (Moving, Beautiful, Foreigners)
“Boaz answered her, ‘I know about all the help you have given to your mother-in-law Naomi. I know you helped her even after your husband died. And I know that you left your father and mother and your own country and came here to this country. You did not know anyone from this country, but you came here with Naomi. God will reward you for all the good things you have done. God, the God of Israel, will pay you in full. You have come to Him for safety, and He will protect you”
1 Samuel 1:8 (Moving, Beautiful, Marriage)
“One year when [Hannah began to cry and fast because of how upset Peninnah made her], her husband Elkanah said to her, ‘Hannah, why are you crying? Why won’t you eat? Why are you so sad? You have me. Isn’t that better than having even ten sons?”
A rare moment in the Bible where the husband of a wife consoles her by suggesting their love for each other can outpower the primal drive for children
1 Samuel 1:10 (Moving, Beautiful, Emotions)
“Hannah was so sad that she cried the whole time she was praying to God”
1 Samuel 1:13 (Prayer)
“Hannah was praying in her heart. Her lips were moving, but since she did not say the words out loud, Eli thought she was drunk”
Shows that we can pray to God with our hearts and minds too instead of our lips, likely where the concept of “mental prayer” derives from biblically
1 Samuel 3:2-10 (Relationship w/ God, Prayer)
“Eli’s eyes were getting so weak that he was almost blind. One night he went to his room to go to bed. The special lamp in God’s temple was still burning, so Samuel lay down in the temple near where the Ark of the Covenant was. God called Samuel, and Samuel answered, ‘Here I am.’ Samuel thought Eli was calling him, so he ran to Eli and said, ‘Here I am. You called me.’ But Eli said, ‘I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.’ So Samuel went back to bed. Again God called, ‘Samuel!’ Again Samuel ran to Eli and said, ‘Here I am. You called me.’ Elli said, ‘I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.’ Samuel did not yet know God because God had not spoken directly to him before. God called Samuel the third time. Again Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, ‘Here I am. You called me.’ Finally, Eli understood that God was calling the boy. Eli told Samuel, ‘Go to bed. If He calls you again, say, ‘Speak, God. I am your servant, and I am listening.’ So Samuel went back to bed. God came and stood there. He called as He did before, saying, ‘Samuel, Samuel!’ Samuel said, ‘Speak. I am your servant, and I am listening’”
This passage demonstrates that…
1 Samuel 16:7 (Judgment)
“But God said to Samuel, Eliab is tall and handsome, but don’t judge by things like that. God doesn’t look at what people see. People judge by what is on the outside, but God looks at the heart. Eliab is not the right man.”
Demonstrates that God does not judge people on the outside, but rather on the inside and thus that we should also judge people on the inside, rather than the outside
1 Samuel 16:16-17, 23 (Music)
“Give us the command and we will look for someone who can play the harp. If the evil spirit from God comes on you, this person will play music for you. Then you will feel better […] Any time the evil spirit from God came on Saul, David would take his harp and play it. The evil spirit would leave Saul and he would begin to feel better”
Demonstrates that music has the power to heal us
1 Samuel 18:1-4; 20:4,12-15,41-42 (Moving, Beautiful, Friendship)
“After David finished talking with Saul, Jonathan developed a strong friendship with David. Jonathan loved David as much as himself, so they made a special agreement. Jonathan took off the coat he was wearing and gave it to David. In fact, Jonathan gave David his whole uniform - including his sword, his bow, and even his belt”
“Jonathan said to David, ‘I will do anything you want me to do’”
“Johnathon said to David, ‘I make this promise before God, the God of Israel. I promise that I will learn how my father feels about you. I will learn if he feels good about you or not. Then, in three days, I will send a message to you in the field. If my father wants to hurt you, I will let you know. I will let you leave in safety. May God punish me if I don’t do this. May God be with you as He has been with my father. As long as I live, show me the same kindness God does. And if I die, never stop showing this kindness to my family. Be faithful to us, even when God destroys all your enemies from the earth.’ So Jonathon made this agreement with David and his family, and he asked God to hold them responsible for keeping it”
“When the boy left, David came out from his hiding place on the other side of the hill. David gave a formal greeting by bowing to the ground three times to show his respect for Jonathan. But then David and Jonathan kissed each other and cried together. It was a very sad goodbye, especially for David. Then Jonathan said to David, ‘Go in peace. We have taken an oath in God’s name to be friends forever. We have asked God to be a witness between us and our descendants forever”
1 Samuel 23:16-17 (Beautiful, Moving, Friendship)
“But Saul’s son Jonathan went to see David at Horesh and encouraged him to have a stronger faith in God. Jonathan told David, ‘Don’t be afraid. My father Saul won’t hurt you. You will become the king of Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father knows this’”
1 Samuel 24:6-7 (Beautiful, Moving, Respect)
“[David] said to his men, ‘I pray God never lets me do anything like that to my master again. I must not do anything against Saul, because he is God’s chosen king.’ David said these things to stop his men. He would not let his men hurt Saul. Saul left the cave and went on his way”
1 Samuel 24:8-15 (Beautiful, Moving, Respect)
“Later, David came out of the cave and called out to Saul, ‘My lord the king!’ Saul looked back. David bowed with his face to the ground to show his respect. David said to Saul, ‘Why do you listen when people say, ‘David plans to hurt you’? You can see that with your own eyes that is not true. God put you within my grasp today in the cave, but I refused to kill you. I was merciful to you. I said, I won’t hurt my master. Saul is God’s chosen king. Look at this piece of cloth in my hand. I cut off the corner of your robe. I could have killed you, but I didn’t. Now, I want you to understand this. I want you to know that I am not planning anything against you. I did nothing wrong to you, but you are hunting me and trying to kill me. Let God be the judge. I hope God will punish you for the wrong you did to me, but I won’t fight you myself. There is an old saying: Bad things come from bad people. I haven’t done anything bad, and I won’t hurt you. Who are you chasing? Did the king of Israel bring an army to chase a single flea or a dying dog? Let God be the judge. Let Him decide between you and me. He will support me and show that I am right. He will save me from you’”
1 Samuel 24:16-20 (Beautiful, Moving, Humility)
“When David finished speaking, Saul asked, ‘Is that your voice, David my son?’ Then Saul lifted his voice and began to cry. He said, ‘You are right, and I am wrong. You were good to me, even though I have been bad to you. You yourself said it when you told me about the good things you did. God put my life in your hands, but you did not kill me. This shows that you are not my enemy. A man doesn’t catch his enemy, and then just let him go. He doesn’t do good things for his enemy. May God reward you for being good to me today. Now, I know that you will become the new king. You will rule the kingdom of Israel’”
1 Samuel 25:26-31 (Beautiful, Moving, Plea)
“[Abigail tells David,] God has kept you from killing innocent people. As surely as God lives and you as well, may your enemies and anyone else who wants to harm you be as cursed as Nabal is. Now, I am bringing this gift to you. Please give [this food on donkeys] to your men. Please forgive me for doing wrong. I know God will make your family strong because you fight His battles. People will never find anything bad about you as long as you live. If someone chases you to kill you, God will save your life. But He will throw away your enemies like a stone from a sling. God promised to do many good things for you, and He will keep His promises. He will make you leader over Israel. So don’t do anything that would make you guilty of killing innocent people. Please don’t fall into that trap. Please remember me when God blesses you”

“I love the words from His mouth more than I love my food”
Job 3:20-26 (Struggle w/ God / Death / Anxiety)
“Why must a suffering person continue to live? Why let anyone live such a bitter life? Such people want to die, but death does not come. They search for death more than for hidden treasure. They would be happy to find their grave. They would rejoice to find their tomb. But God keeps their future a secret and builds a wall around them to protect them. When it is time to eat, all I can do is sigh with sadness, not joy. My groans pour out like water. I was afraid something terrible would happen, and what I feared most has happened. I cannot calm down or relax, I am too upset to rest!”
Job 4:2-6 (Hope)
“… you have taught many people. You encouraged those who were ready to quit. Your words helped those who were ready to fall. You gave strength to those who could not stand by themselves. But now troubles comes to you and you are discouraged. Trouble hits you and you are upset. You worship God. You trust Him. You are a good man, so let that be your hope”

Job 7:1-4 (Struggle w/ God / Beautiful / Relatable)

I toss and turn until the sun comes up”
Job 7:17-21 (Struggle w/ God / Beautiful / Relatable)
“God, why are people so important to you? Why do You even notice them?” Why do You visit them every morning and test them at every moment? You never look away from me or leave me alone for a second. You are always watching us! If I sinned, would that hurt You? Why have You made me Your target? Have I become a problem for You? Why don’t You just pardon me for doing wrong? Why don’t You just forgive me for my sins? Soon I will die and be in my grave. You will search for me, but I will be gone”

Job 9:22-24 (Struggle w/ God / Relatable)
“So I say, ‘Does it make any difference? God destroys the innocent as well as the guilty.’ Is it God who laughs when a disaster kills innocent people? Is it God who keeps the leaders from seeing when an evil person takes control? If it not God, then who is it? My days are passing faster than a runner. They are flying by without any joy. They go by as quickly as papyrus boats, as fast as an eagle swooping down on its prey. I could say, ‘I will not complain. I will forget my pain and put a smile on my face.’ But the suffering still frightens me. I know that God will not see me as innocent. I will be found guilty, so why should I even think about it?”
Job 9:32-35 (Struggle w/ God / Relatable)
“God is not a human like me, so I cannot argue with Him. I cannot take Him to court. I wish there were someone who could listen to both sides, someone both of us in a fair way. Job 10:15-17, 20 (Struggle w/ God / Relatable)
“If I sin, I am guilty and should be cursed. But even when I am innocent, I cannot lift up my head. I am so ashamed because of all the troubles I have. If I have any success and feel proud, you hunt me down like a lion and show your power over me. You bring witness after witness to prove that I am wrong. Again and again you show your anger as you send army after army against me […] My life is almost finished. So leave me alone! Let me enjoy the little time I have left. I am going soon to the land of no return, the place of death and darkness”
Job 11:4-6, 13-15 (Struggle w/ God / Relatable)
“You say to God, ‘My arguments are right, and you can see I am pure.’ I wish God would answer you and tell you that you are wrong. He could tell you the secret of wisdom. He would tell you that every story has two sides. You can be sure of this: God is not punishing you as much as He should […]. Prepare your heart to serve only God. Lift your arms and pray to Him. Put away the sin that you still hold on to. Don’t keep evil in your tent. If you will do that, you could look to God without shame. You can stand strong and not be afraid”
Job 12:4-5 (Struggle w/ God / Relatable)

I wish You would hide me there, until Your anger is gone. Then You could pick a time to remember me”
Job 15:4, 7, 11-13 (Struggle w/ God / Relatable)

[…] God tries to comfort you, but that is not enough for you. We have spoken this message to you in a gentle way. Why will you not understand? Why can you not see the truth? You are expressing your anger against God when you say these things”
Job 16:4-6 (Struggle w/ God / Relatable)
“I also could say the same things you say, if you had my troubles. I could say wise things against you and shake my head at you. But I would say things to encourage you and give you hope. ‘Nothing I say makes my pain go away. But keeping quiet does not help either’”

He has made me His target […] My face is red from crying. There are dark rings around my eyes. I love the words from His mouth more than I love my food. But God never changes, and who can stand against Him? He does anything He wants.
