Anatomy
The study of the structures (parts) of an organism.
Physiology
The study of activities of the structures (parts) of an organism.
Dorsal
Referring to the back side of an organism.
Ventral
Referring to the front or belly side of an organism.
Medial
Closer to the midline of the body.
Lateral
Further away from the midline of the body.
Proximal
Closer to a point of attachment or to the trunk of the body.
Distal
Further away from a point of attachment or from the trunk of the body.
Cranial
Referring to the head region.
Thoracic
Referring to the chest region.
Abdominal
Relating to the abdomen.
Pelvic
Pertaining to the pelvic region.
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that retains the properties of that element.
Molecule
Particles composed of more than one atom.
Compound
A molecule containing two or more different elements.
Isomers
Different molecules with the same chemical formula.
Ions
Particles that carry a net electrical charge.
Acid
A chemical that can donate a proton in a solution.
Base
A chemical that can remove a proton from a solution.
Organic Molecules
Molecules that contain carbon and are the basis of life.
Monomers
Basic molecular units that can combine to form polymers.
Polymers
Molecules made up of many repeating units (monomers).
