What is the purpose of thermoregulation?
Helps the body stay at 37°C, the temperature where enzymes work the best.
What monitors and controls body temperature?
The thermoregulatory centre in the brain
What happens when body temp rises?
Core body/skin temperature rises → thermoregulatory centre in the brain→ sweat produced + evaporates, vasodilation of blood vessels (more blood to skin to let out radiation), erector muscles let hairs lie flat → core body temp falls → normal core body temp
What happens when body temp drops?
Core body/skin temp falls → thermoregulatory centre in the brain → no swear, vasoconstriction of blood vessels, less blood to skin (less radiation given off), erector muscles contract, hair stands up → core body temp rises → normal body temp
How does shivering help with keeping warm?
Shivering helps to produce heat energy
How does hair standing up help to stay warm?
Helps to trap air, acting as an insulator.
