What is a Natural Resource?
A naturally formed substance which can be used. Examples: fish, trees, gold, gas, oil, fur, fresh water, wheat.
What is a renewable resource?
A resource that can replenish itself within a human generation. Examples: trees, fish, soil
What is a non-renewable resource?
A resource that can only be used once. Examples: oil, gas, minerals
What is Sustainable Development?
Meeting our needs without risk of future generations going without. It considers our economic and environmental health today and in the future.
What is Primary Industry?
Industries that take raw material from the natural environment. Employs ~ 4% of the Canadian workforce
Give some examples of Primary Industry
Agriculture, Fishing, Mining, Forestry, Oil and Gas
What is Secondary Industry?
Involves the processing of primary-industry products into finished goods. Employs ~ 21% of the Canadian workforce
Give some examples of Secondary Industry
Manufacturing, Construction, Utilities
What is Tertiary Industry?
Provides a wide range of services that support primary and secondary industries and society in general. Employs most working Canadians at ~ 75% of the Canadian workforce
Give some examples of Tertiary Industry
Retail, Transportation, Warehousing, Education, Health and Social Services, Finance, Insurance, Real Estate, Government
What is Quaternary Industry?
Any tertiary industry that involves processing ideas rather than products. These jobs are highly specialized (and usually expensive) knowledge-based technological and support services.
