Breathing
The physical process by which air is taken into and expelled from the lungs.
Respiration
The biochemical process that occurs in cells to produce energy, involving oxygen intake and carbon dioxide removal.
Inhalation
The process of taking air into the lungs.
Exhalation
The process of expelling air from the lungs.
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs.
Diffusion
The movement of gases from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Aerobic respiration
Respiration that requires oxygen to produce energy.
Anaerobic respiration
Respiration that occurs without oxygen, producing energy and waste products such as lactic acid.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
A molecule that carries energy within cells.
ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate)
A molecule that results from the breakdown of ATP and can be converted back to ATP.
Vital Capacity
The maximum amount of air a person can exhale after maximum inhalation.
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
A lifesaving technique used in emergencies when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a stable internal environment in the body.
Cilia
Microscopic hair-like structures that line the respiratory tract and help keep it clear of mucus and debris.
Trachea
Also known as the windpipe, it carries air to and from the lungs.
Bronchi
Two primary tubes that branch from the trachea into the lungs.
Bronchioles
Smaller airways that branch from the bronchi and lead to the alveoli.
