PRE LAB QUESTIONS
what was the purpose of the aging and frailty lab?
to stimulate aging using frailty equipment
what is frailty?
when an individual is less able to recover from a stressor event
what causes frailty?
prevalence increases with age - but not old people are frail
the frailty in older individuals is due to the decline in multiple physiological systems
how is frailty measured?
67 different ways
two main ways:
frailty phenotype - the presence of 3 or more symptoms
frailty index: symptoms are measure on a scale
LAB PART 1: Physical frailty tests - short performance physicals battery
what is the purpose part 1?
to stimulate the physical symptoms of frailty associated with aging
what activities will be completed in part 1?
SPBB test twice, first with without the aging equipment and the second time with the aging equipment
what does the SPBB test consist of?
romberg balance test
gait speed test
chair test
what materials are used in part 1 of the lab?
knee pads
over shoes
back brace
headphones
simulation glasses
simulation googles
chair
4 meter path
stopwatch
what was the purpose of the knee brace and back brace?
to stimulate restricted range of motion - potentially affecting how people did in balance test and gait speed
what was the purpose of the overshoes?
they had an uneven surface to affect balance
what purpose of glasses?
they were scratched to stimulate cataracts
what was the purpose of the googles?
the were used to stimulate glaucoma
what was the purpose of the headphones that played music?
to stimulate tinnitus
LAB PART 2
what was the purpose of lab part 2: mini mental state exam (MMSE)
to stimulate the neurological/cognitive symptoms of frailty associated with aging
what activities were completed in lab part 2
orientation
registration
attention and calculation
recall
language
what was the max score in tge test?
30 however 23 or lower would indicate some level of cognitive impairment
what equipment was used in lab part 2
gloves
cotton balls
googles
glasses
what was the purpose of the gloves?
to impact dextarity
what was the purpose of the cotton balls?
to muffle hearing
what was the purpose of the glasses?
to stimulate cataracts
what was the purpose of goggles
to stimulate glaucoma
what protocals were taken in lab part 2?
in pairs
one acts as interviewer and ones acts as patient (patient wears the stimulation equipment)
then the interviewer will ask the questions
complete the MMSE
switch rolls
