Why is Diamond very hard?

because single covalent bonds between carbon atoms are strong, the entire structure of diamond is a continuous network of these bonds.

2
New cards

Why does Diamond Sublime at a high point?

since there are only strong covalent bonds between carbon atoms, this makes the sublimation point very high

3
New cards

Why is Diamond Non-conductive?

does not conduct electricity because it doesn't contain any charged particles that are free to move

4
New cards

Why is Diamond Brittle?

due to the strength of the single covalent bonds they break rather than bend.

5
New cards

Why is Graphite Conductive?

each carbon atom is bonded to three other carbon, the fourth valence electron from each atom is able to move within the layer (delocalised electrons) meaning it is very conductive.

6
New cards

Why is Graphite Slippery?

the weak dispersion forces allow the layers to slide over each other, and reduces friction between moving parts.

7
New cards

Why does Graphite Sublime at a high point?

the strong covalent bonds between atoms explain graphites resistance to heat
