Submucosa ⇥ Layer of areolar and dense irregular connective tissue containing blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves.

Muscularis externa ⇥ Layer of smooth muscle responsible for movement of food through the digestive tract.
Muscularis externa - Circular layer ⇥ Inner smooth muscle layer that constricts the lumen.
Muscularis externa - Longitudinal layer ⇥ Outer smooth muscle layer that shortens the tract.
Muscularis externa Functions ⇥ Controls segmentation (mixing) and peristalsis (movement) of food via the myenteric plexus.
Serosa (visceral peritoneum) ⇥ Outer layer made of areolar connective tissue and simple squamous epithelium.
Serosa Functions ⇥ Reduces friction between digestive organs as they move.
Mesothelium ⇥ Simple squamous epithelium that lines the serosa.
Adventitia (esophagus only) ⇥ Connective tissue layer that replaces serosa in the esophagus and anchors it to surrounding structures.
