What is sustainable development?
Sustainable development is an approach to development that takes account of the needs of present society while not damaging the life of future generations.
What do humans use the Earth’s resources to provide?
Warmth
Shelter
Food
Transport
What do natural resources suplemented by agriculture provide?
Food
Timber
Clothing
Feuls
What are finite resources from the Earth, oceans and atmosphere processed to provide?
Energy and materials.
What is an example of a product that has been suplemented or replaced by an agricultural and synthetic product?
Rubber.
What is potable water?
Potable water is water that is safe to drink.
What should drinking water for humans have?
Low levels of dissolved salts and microbes.
What is pure water?
Pure water is water that only contains H20 molecules in it.
Why is potable water not pure water?
Potable water contains dissolved substances.
what do methods used to produce potable water depend on?
Available supplies of water and local conditions.
What is fresh water?
Water with low levels of dissolved substances.
In the Uk where will fresh water collect?
Surface water
Ground water
What is the process for creating potable water?
Filtration:Wire and mesh screens then gravel and sand beds to filtter any remaining solids.
Sterilisation:The water is sterlizied to kill any harmful bacteria or microbes by bubbling chlorine gas through it.
What are three sterlizing agents used for potable water?
Chlorine
Ozone
Ultraviolet light
what process may be used if supplies of fresh water are limited?
Distillation
Reverse osmosis
Why is the process of desalination so expensive?
The process requires large amounts of energy.
How does the process of reverse osmosis work?
The salty water is passed through a membrane
that only allows water molecules to pass through
so ions and larger molecules are trapped by the membranes
so seperated from the water.
