homologous chromosomes
Chromosomes that are similar in shape, size, and genetic content, with one inherited from each parent. They pair up during meiosis, allowing for genetic recombination.
centromere
Region of a chromosome where sister chromatids are joined and where the spindle fibers attach during cell division.
sister chromatids
Identical copies of a chromosome, joined together at the centromere, formed during DNA replication.
nonsister chromatids
Chromatids from homologous chromosomes that are not identical, resulting from different parental sources.

How are genes represented in this diagram?
Genes are represented by the colored regions on each of the chromosomes.
