Trait Theories
Often referred to as the “great man theories” from Aristoles’s philosophy of individuals being born with leadership traits.
Style Theories
Instead of focusing on traits, this theory focuses on how leaders behave. Assumption that leadership styles can be learned and cultivated. High-High leaders are ideal, high concerns for accomplishing tasks and high concern for maintaining collaborative relationships.
Situational-Contingency Theories
Propose that leadership effectiveness depends on any given situation. Outcomes are contingent on situational factors.
Relational Leadership Styles
Leadership styles that focus on people and relationships, include: transformational, resonant, and authentic leadership.
Transformational Leadership
Often described as the “gold standard” for leadership practice, defined by four characteristics:
Idealized influence and motivational inspiration - associated with charisma
Individualized consideration and intellectual stimulation - commonly employed with individuals/small groups of followers
Associated with greater job satisfaction and autonomy among nurses.
Resonant Leadership
Leaders that are effective at coaching and creating environments in which everyone is highly engaged and encouraged to contribute to their full potential.
Authentic Leadership
Leaders that are typically more focused on the support, growth, and development of others, rather than on personal success and advancement. Foundational for strengths-based leadership.

Management
Involves getting the job done and ensuring that people have the necessary resources to get the job done.
