Ionic Compounds
Compounds composed of ions held together by electrostatic forces.
Anion
A negatively charged ion.
Cation
A positively charged ion.
Naming Ionic Compounds
For binary ionic compounds, name the anion (non-metal) with the suffix -ide and the cation (metal) first.
Exceptions in Naming Anions
Some anions have specific names, e.g., azote becomes nitrure instead of azoture.
Molecular Compounds
Compounds formed by covalent bonds between non-metals.
Prefixes in Molecular Naming
Use prefixes (mono-, di-, tri-, tetra-, etc.) to indicate the number of atoms in molecular compounds.
Dihydrogen Monoxide
Common name for water (H2O).
Chemical Formula of Ionic Compounds
Formed by combining the cation and anion, ensuring overall neutrality.
Cross Multiplication Method
A technique used to derive the formula from the ions' charges.
Pentachloride
A molecular compound consisting of five chlorine atoms and another element.
Simplicity in Formulas
In chemical formulas, indices of 1 are omitted.
