Total shoulder arthroplasty TSA or Total shoulder replacement (humeral head and glenoid replaced)
(Normal anatomy humeral head is ball and glenoid is socket)
Performed when person has degenerative or inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis
Humeral head replacement or hemi arthroplasty (glenoid still intact only head is replaced)
For people with rheumatoid arthritis, ostheoarthritis, or Avascular necrosis ( blood supply shoulder interrupted)
Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (glenoid becomes ball and humeral head becomes socket)
Indicated for patients with a degenerative or inflammatory condition present in the shoulder complex but also with some deficiency in the rotator cuff
This relies on deltoid muscle for shoulder movement rather than rotator cuff
When should a shoulder sling be worn?
During functional activities, during ambulation and sleep
When and what are the precautions
For approx 6-8 weeks
No weight bearing
No lifting more than 2lbs
Shoulder extension past neutral
Shoulder abduction past 45 degrees
External rotation past 30 degrees
Internal rotation past 60 degrees
