Central Nervous System (CNS)
Consists of the brain and spinal cord, controlling most functions of the body and mind
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Connects the CNS to the rest of the body and is responsible for transmitting sensory and motor information
Autonomic Nervous System
A subdivision of the PNS that controls involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate and digestion
Difference between Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous System
The Sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for action (fight or flight), while the Parasympathetic System calms the body and conserves energy (rest and digest)
Methods of studying the brain
EEG & fMRI
What is an EEG (Electroencephalogram)
A method that measures electrical brain wave activity
What is an fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
A technique that measures brain activity by detecting changes in blood flow
Cerebellum
Controls balance and coordination
what does the Reticular formation do
Regulates sleep and wakefulness
What is the Limbic system involved in
Controls emotions, memory, and motivation
What is the role of the Cerebral Cortex
The outer layer of the brain, responsible for higher mental functions like thinking and decision making
Neuroplasticity
The brains ability to adapt and reorganize itself by forming new neural connections
Neurogenesis
The process of creating new neurons in the brain
Alzeheimeās Disease
A neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory loss and cognitive decline
What is Biofeedback
A technique that teaches people to control physiological processes, such as heart rate, through feedback
