Can a giant ionic lattice conduct electricity?

No this is due to the strong electrostatic forces of attraction which lock the ions in place.

However when melted or dissolved in water these ionic bonds are broken and the ions can carry a charge as they are free to move.

2
New cards

Why do Giant ionic lattice have high melting and boiling points?

Due to the strong electrostatic forces of attraction , a great deal of heat energy is needed to break them.

3
New cards

Do small molecules have high melting and boiling points?

No, this is because they have weak intermolecular forces which do not require a great deal of heat energy to break

4
New cards

Does diamond conduct electricity?

No this is because diamond is made up of carbon atoms and each carbon atom is covalently bonded to 4 other carbon atoms. This means all of the outer electrons are in covalent bonds and there are no free electrons to carry a charge.

5
New cards

Why does graphite have a high boiling point?

Graphite contains a lot of covalent bonds which will require a lot of energy to break

6
New cards

Why is graphite soft and slippery?

The hexagonal rings of graphite are arranged into layers with no covalent bonds between them. This means the layers can slide over each other.

7
New cards

Why does graphite conduct electricity?

Graphite is made up of carbon atoms and each carbon atoms are covaelntly bonded to only 3 other carbon atoms. Therefore there is one more electron on the outermost shell that is not in a covaelnt bond. These electrons are released becoming delocalised electrons so they can carry a charge around the structure.

8
New cards

Why does the boiling point increase as you go down group 7?

-Molecules get bigger as you go down the group

-Bigger molecules=more intermolecular forces between the different molecules

-More energy is required to break all of them

9
New cards

What are the properties of carbon nanotubes

High tensile strenght -able to apply a great deal of stretching force before it breaks.

Good conductor of electricity -they have delocalised electrons

10

What are the uses of fullerenes?

-Deliver drugs into the body -Catalyst to speed up chemical reactions -lubricant in machines
