Chemical Nomenclature of Ionic Compounds:
Name the cation first, and then the anion.
Monoatomic cation:
Given name of element.
Monoatomic anion:
Given name of element + suffix "ide."
Polyatomic ion:
Given name of ion.
What are variable charge metals?
Metal elements that form cations of differing magnitudes (charge numbers).
Chemical Nomenclature of Compounds With Variable-Charge Metals:
1. Name the cation first, and then the anion.
2. Specify the charge of the metal ion by a Roman numeral after its name.
What is a hydrate?
A compound (often ionic) with bound water molecules within.
Chemical Nomenclature of Hydrates:
1. Name the anhydrous compound with the cation first, and then the anion.
2. Add the word hydrate with a Greek prefix denoting the number of water molecules.
Naming Binary Molecular (Covalent) Compounds:
1. Name the more metallic element (furthest left/bottom) first, and the more nonmetallic element (furthest right/top) + suffix "ide" after.
2. Designate the number of atoms of each element with Greek prefixes.
Naming Acids:
1. Change hydrogen to the prefix "hydro."
2. Change the other nonmetallic element name by adding the suffix "ic."
3. Add the word "acid" as a second word.
