Hand hygiene
The practice of cleaning hands to prevent the spread of infections.
Two identifiers
Verifying patient identity using two distinct pieces of information, such as name and date of birth.
Phlebitis
Inflammation of a vein, often in response to an IV insertion or medication.
Infiltration
The accidental administration of a non-vesicant solution into the surrounding tissue instead of the intended vein.
Extravasation
The accidental infiltration of a vesicant solution into surrounding tissue, causing damage.
Z-track technique
A method used for administering intramuscular injections to prevent medication leakage back into the subcutaneous tissue.
Isotonic IV fluid
A solution with the same osmolarity as blood plasma, commonly used for hydration.
Hypotonic IV fluid
A solution with lower osmolarity than blood plasma, used to hydrate cells.
Hypertonic IV fluid
A solution with higher osmolarity than blood plasma, often used to draw fluid out of cells.
Med check
A safety step performed to ensure the correct medication is being administered at the right dose and to the right patient.
