etiology of cognitive impairment

majority of cases the cause is unknown

• early manifestations — abnormal eye contact, feeding difficulties, fine/gross motor delays, decrease alertness, decreased response to social cues, echolalia, loss of milestones between 15-30m/o

implications for cognitive impairment

• individualize teaching to pts needs

• make referrals

• teach self care skills

• encourage play and socialization

• assist with communication skills

autism spectrum disorder

• communication impairment

• complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affect an individual’s ability to communicate and interact with others in a social setting

• delay in at least one — social interaction, social communication, imaginative play before age 3
