Oxidation
The process of losing electrons, which results in an increase in oxidation state.
Reduction
The process of gaining electrons, which results in a decrease in oxidation state.
Redox Reactions
Chemical reactions that involve both oxidation and reduction occurring simultaneously.
Oxidizing Agent
The substance that gains electrons and is reduced in a redox reaction.
Reducing Agent
The substance that loses electrons and is oxidized in a redox reaction.
OIL RIG
A mnemonic to remember that Oxidation Is Losing, Reduction Is Gaining electrons.
Net Ionic Equation
An equation that shows only the species that actually change during the reaction, omitting spectator ions.
Spectator Ions
Ions that do not participate in the actual chemical reaction and remain unchanged.
Oxidation State
The hypothetical charge an atom would have if all bonds were completely ionic.
Transition Metals
Elements that can have variable oxidation states and form colored compounds.
Elemental Form
The natural state of a substance where it is not combined with any other elements.
