What is Popular Sovereignty?
The principle that the authority of a state and its government are created and sustained by the consent of its people, through their elected representatives, who are the source of all political power.
Explain Limited Government.
The government is restricted in its powers by a constitution or a written agreement. This means no government is all-powerful, and it can only do things that the people have given it the power to do.
What is Separation of Powers?
The division of governmental power into three distinct branches: legislative (makes laws), executive (enforces laws), and judicial (interprets laws), to prevent any single branch from becoming too powerful.
Describe Checks and Balances.
A system where each branch of government has the power to limit, or check, the actions of the other two branches, ensuring that no one branch becomes too powerful.
What is Judicial Review?
The power of the courts to determine whether acts of the legislative and executive branches of government are consistent with the nation's constitution. This power was established in the landmark case of Marbury\ v.\ Madison.
Define Federalism.
A system of government in which power is divided between a central (federal) government and regional (state) governments, sharing power over the same territory and people.
What is Republicanism?
The belief that the best form of government is one in which the citizens elect representatives to govern on their behalf and according to their will, rather than directly by the people themselves.
